Rehoboth: Our Sister Farm
Meet John and Willy, our good friends at Rehoboth Farm in Chilliwack. It didn't take us long to figure out that farming is only really sustainable when you work together with other, like minded folks to streamline efficiencies and to help each other out with a little moral support from time to time. We were so happy to meet these fine folks who are basically farming just like us but on more land out in the Fraser Valley.
It makes good sense for urban and rural farms to team up. Urban farms have access to lots of city resources like food waste and can connect with customers easily. Rural farms have lots of space and access to large equipment. For us, working with John and Willy makes great business sense!
For example, we never have enough eggs to keep up with demand. You can only raise so many chickens on a small farm like ours! But John and Willy have room for hundreds of birds. So, we can focus our chicken efforts on fancy, endangered heritage breed hens that lay unusual, coloured eggs and supplement our eggs with John & Willy's. When they bring us eggs, they also bring us two big barrels of brew mash from a local brewery which is an excellent supplement to our chicken's diet. We help Rehoboth by distributing their eggs to our customers and they help us by reducing our feed costs. Both the Urban Digs' and Rehoboth flocks are on a diet of non-GMO, all Canadian grains, brew mash, and other nutritious food scraps that the girls turn into delicious eggs! And both flocks are truly 'free range' on pasture.
