Intern Position Description

Interns with Urban Digs and Yummy Yards work with farm staff to produce food in a mindful and caring environment using organic methods. Interns are valuable members of the farm team and will work alongside farm managers, leadership interns and volunteers to develop an urban farm that demonstrates and inspires others by contributing to a safe and secure food system. 

Position Title:  Intern

INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintain urban agriculture sites including preparation, starting, maintaining, harvesting and animal husbandry
  • Preparation: prepare beds, compost, set up hoop houses, gather materials
  • Starting: seed tray prep, watering, transplanting, weeding, pest management, fertilizing
  • Maintaining: weeding, irrigation, pest management, fertilizing, thinning, pruning
  • Harvesting: picking, bunching, post harvest handling, washing eggs
  • Animal Husbandry:  feeding, watering, cleaning, pest management, building infrastructure, harvesting, facilities maintenance and repair
  • Attend a minimum of two farm family dinners per month
  • Attend community outreach events as a representative of the farm
  • Dress appropriately for work (t-shirts, protective clothing and footwear)
  • Treat others with professionalism and respect
  • Encourage community support as the member of the farm
  • Bring concerns and suggestions to the attention of the farm team
  • Arrive on time and complete weekly commitment of intern hours
  • Notify farm manager if unable to report for work when ill or in an emergency situation
  • Report all serious incidents to the farm manager
  • Arrive prepared for a four hour or full day of work (including bringing snacks, lunch) 
  • Attend a minimum of two farm fresh dinners per month (Wednesday or Thursday evenings)
  • Attend (and assist) at least three urban farming workshops offered by the farm
  • Negotiate shift schedule on acceptance as an intern
  • Be conscientious and pro-active in daily learning opportunities on the farm
  • Be courteous and respectful of property owners… 
  • Attend orientation session April 28th 2012 from 4-6 pm
  • Attend training session April 29th 2012  from 9am-3:30pm
  • Have fun!!!!!!

TIME COMMITMENT
  • Urban Digs requires a commitment of 18~20 hours/week  (Monday through Friday)  in 4-hour (or longer) shifts  from April 27th ~ August 31st 2012 with possible extension into the fall
  • Yummy Yards requires a commitment of  8~14 hours/week (Monday through Friday)  in 4-hour (or longer) shifts from April 27th ~ August 31st 2012 with possible extension into the fall

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Interest in sustainable agriculture and neighborhood food security
  • Reliable, punctual, energetic, enthusiastic and positive
  • Safety conscious and aware of risks and safety procedures when using machinery, doing heavy lifting etc.
  • Basic knowledge of tool use
  • Courteous and professional
  • Ability to take direction and complete tasks
  • Valid BC Driver’s License is an asset
  • First Aid and Food Safe certificates are an asset
