The CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) model was started in the eastern United States in the 1980's, inspired by European biodynamic farmer, Rudolph Steiner. Traditionally, members pay for a "share" of the farm's harvest at the beginning of the season. This gives the farmer a cash influx at a time of year when expenses are high be revenues would normally be low. In this manner, members share in the same risks (drought, pests, disease, etc) and reward (bountiful harvests and a personal connection to the food system) the farmer experiences. In lean years, members may get less than they would have been able to purchase at the grocery store with the same amount of money. In good years, they may get much more. Once the harvest season begins, members usually pick up a box of fresh produce on a set day/time once a week until the end of the season.
