Leadership Intern Position Description

Leadership Interns will have interned or apprenticed with an urban or rural farm for a season, demonstrating the knowledge, resources and skills to manage certain farm duties without supervision.  Further, Leadership Interns will provide mentorship to Farm Interns as they develop familiarity with farm tasks. 

Position Title: Senior Intern 

PROGRAM DURATION:  April 27th ~ August 31st 2012 with possible extension into the fall.

TIME COMMITMENT: 18~20 hours/week

Farms require leadership interns to commit to the hours prescribed above, in minimum 4-hour shifts.  Interns are required to decide how they will schedule their hours (Monday through Friday) at the beginning of the season.  Interns are required to attend a minimum of two farm fresh dinners per month (Wednesday or Thursday evenings). 

INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES (in addition to all regular intern responsibilities)

Training
  • Assist in organization and coordination of farm orientation (April 27th 2012 at 4pm)
  • Attend and assist in farm intern training (April 28th 2012 9am-3:30pm)
  • Attend (and assist) at least three urban farming workshops offered through the farm
  • Be conscientious and pro-active in daily learning opportunities on the farm
  • Provide and share learning opportunities for Farm Interns.  

Administrative
  • website updates (blog)
  • newsletter contributions
  • social media (facebook, twitter)
  • assisting with deliveries
  • make purchases

Community
  • attend community events on behalf of the farm
  • act as an ambassador for the farm
  • assist with the preparation of farm family meals
  • volunteer coordination

Intern Management

  • in the absence of the farm manager:
  • give direction to other interns and volunteers
  • use discretion in dealing with farm incidents

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 1 year experience in our (or a comparable) internship program
  • Passion for sustainable agriculture and neighborhood food security
  • Reliable, punctual, energetic, enthusiastic and positive.
  • Safety Conscious (awareness of risks and safety procedures using machinery, heavy lifting etc.)
  • Courteous and Professional
  • Ability to take direction and complete tasks
  • Entrepreneurial, taking initiative
  • Setting an example for work ethic and diligence
  • Ability to work without supervision (works independently)
  • Basic skills with tools
  • Valid BC Driver’s License (asset)
  • First Aid and Food Safe (asset)
